Information for Parents

  • What we do and who we work with to ensure the safety and safeguarding of children

Keeping children and young people safe is our number one priority. Here are some of the ways we do this:

Volunteers have a criminal records check as part of safer recruitment.

Volunteers must undertake written risk assessments for all activities within Scouts.

Adult members take mandatory safety and safeguarding learning every three years.

All adults must follow our Safeguarding Code of Conduct (Yellow Card) and Safeguarding Policy.

All safeguarding concerns are reported to our UK HQ Safeguarding Team, who are trained to manage concerns and work with the police and other authorities.

  • What Uniform items do I need?

    SCOUTS

A Beaver polo shirt and jumper for Beavers, Cubs polo shirt jumper for Cubs, and Scout shirt for Scouts.

Dark trousers should be worn (or shorts in warm weather), and for parades we will ask for more specific trousers than we would for normal activities.

    GUIDES

Brownies - All girls should have a uniform top and bottom chosen from the Brownies uniform range. These can be worn for unit meetings, trips and events where formal uniform is needed.

The range includes: T-shirt, Long sleeve t-shirt, Zip hoodie, Gilet, Leggings, Trousers, Skirt, Cycle shorts

Brownies might also want to accessorise with other items from our range, for example, with a baseball cap, but this isn’t part of the uniform.

Guides - All girls should have a uniform top or the uniform dress. Uniform tops can be worn with any bottoms that suit the occasion or activity.

The range includes: Polo shirt, Zip hoodie, Long sleeve top, Dress, Skirt

When young people are invested we give them a neckerchief, woggle and set of badges.

Any lost uniform must be replaced by parents at the shop. Leaders will advise on any more specific needs on a per activity basis (waterproofs, walking shoes etc).

  • Where do I buy uniform?

We run a second hand uniform option for new members.

Additionally Scouts can purchase uniform at the district scout shop. The details of the shop and opening times can be found on the district website https://www.stalbansscouts.org

A key benefit of going to the shop is trying on the uniform – the sizing can sometimes be perplexing, so trying it on is very helpful.

Guide uniforms are available from Stevensons in St Albans or via the https://www.girlguidingshop.co.uk/.

Volunteering

  • Can parents get involved?

Yes, we welcome parent volunteers! Whether you’d like to help at meetings, events, or behind the scenes, there’s a role for everyone.

  • Do leaders need qualifications?

All our leaders are trained, DBS-checked volunteers who are passionate about creating a safe, fun environment for young people.

We offer full training and support for any parents that want to support the group as a leader or helper.

  • What sort of roles are available to help?

We have a wide range of volunteer roles to suit all interests and skills.

Whether it's supporting the group as a leader or helper at the weekly meetings, offering support to help us raise funds or getting involved in the administration of the group, we rely entirely on the support of parents and volunteers.
